One of the strangest effects horror games have on me is how they change the way I pay attention.
In most games, I'm focused on objectives. I want to know where to go, what to collect, and how to progress. The environment matters, but usually as a backdrop to the main experience.
Horror games are different.
They make me notice things I would normally ignore.
