In 2015, Dawn met Ghani Rahman, a shawl weaver working in Islampur, Swat. He spent his days producing woollen shawls on a rented handloom. His goal was to own a loom so he could keep the full payment for his work instead of sharing part of it with the machine’s owner.
At the time, one of his completed shawls could sell for as much as Rs5,000. Yet that price did not belong to the weaver...
